Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Hard to do anything today except celebrate my heritage today(since I am boxed in by the parade route).

I want the gold.

Baton Rouge Velodrome

It seems like sometimes it’s hard to find a place to take out your road bike in New Orleans. Except for the paved track on the top of the river levee, there isn’t a really great paved place to put some serious miles on your bike. There used to be an awesome bike path on the lake in Jefferson Parish from West End all the way to St. Charles Parish called “Linear Park,” but the Army Corps of Engineers has fucked that up beyond all recognition. They are “strengthening” the levees and have chopped up all the trees and bike paths. No word on when they will be finished and what it will look like when they do.

Shucks. This will really bum them out.

On the northshore, there is the Tammany Trace, where you might want to pedal through the woods on this reclaimed “rails to trails” park(grab a beer at the Abita Brewery too).

But if you really want to get serious about road biking, check out the Baton Rouge Velodrome – it’s free and open to the public(check the hours, of course).

The Velo in BR is one of less than 20 velodromes in the US. Velodromes feature steeply banked oval tracks that match the bicycle’s natural lean when moving through curves.

The park is currently under construction at the time of this posting, but it looks like BREC(Baton Rouge’s parks department) is pumping some serious cash into this place to make it an awesome renovated park complete with:

Skate Park, BMX Track, Rock Climbing Tower, Community Playground, Walk/Skate/Bike Trails, Court Games(Tennis and Volleyball), and Open Turf Spaces.

Uh, New Orleans? Hello? Why don’t we build some cool stuff like this?

Skydive New Orleans

Jumping out of a perfectly good airplane is something I recommend to everyone. I did my first jump on my 21st birthday and I felt invincible for about a week.

There is a special rush you get from doing something humans are not supposed to do. you are not supposed to swim with sharks…

…and you are not supposed to drop 10000 feet through the air at 120 miles per hour.

Years ago, I did a couple of tandem skydives with Gold Coast Skydivers when they were near Biloxi. They have since moved inland a bit.

This is now the closest place to go in New Orleans:

It’s just in Slidell, so you can get there quick and you get to see Lake Pontchartrain on your way down.

If you get really good at it, you might want to try this:

Swamp Tour

As a local New Orleanian(born and raised), I have never really been on one of these touristy swamp tours.

I am now intrigued. I’m kinda waiting for an out of town friend to visit who really wants to go on one of these guided swamp tours – complete with airboats and gator taunting.

My number one choice is this dude, Diego at Zam’s Swamp Tours.

Listen to this guy’s voice as he man-handles this snapping turtle:

Anybody done one of these?

Ghetto Workout

Mardi Gras is almost over. You have no excuse – get cracking.

Gym membership fees are waived in the streets. Watching these dudes makes me crave pullups. Add this routine to some running and people will call you “Big Swoll” in about a week.

Make a Movie 3 (SupaSaint)

In a period of about five years, New Orleans has had the “Big One”(Katrina), a snowy white xmas, and now, yes – we are going the muthaforking Superbowl. It’s funny because people have been saying the sentence “the Saints are going to the Superbowl” for 40 years as a joke, but I heard it today on the radio and I was like, “oh yeah, it’s real.” Ha – not a joke this time.

At the end of last season, there was a lot of frustration about having a good team that wasn’t going anywhere and my friend SupaSaint(yes, the superfan SupaSaint) decided to express himself throught the medium of film(as he is inclined to do).

So this wasn’t really my baby creatively, I was just the stunt coordinator. Credit is due to Supa and Nate Tape for putting this thing together and making it look so great. We shot it in this huge abandoned warehouse on the water in New Orleans East. We totally did NOT have permission to shoot there. When the harbor police showed up, we just told them we were making a video for the Saints and I guess we looked professional enough(with  lights, a camera crane, and a full crew). The cops were like, “Oh, cool.” The stunt was really scary and I had to rig this rope swing that pendulumed out to almost 90 degrees. The first place I tried to anchor it was an electronic booth in the ceiling of the warehouse, but a gigantic owl that lived there flipped out on me and almost bit my face off. I ended up rigging somewhere else. Of course, I performed the stunt myself before Supa attempted it to guarantee safety.

Here’s the project:

If you can’t tell, it was inspired by this legendary scene from the movie Footloose, when Kevin Bacon’s character Ren is frustrated in a town where dancing is illegal. Check it out:

Pretty reverent, eh?
