It has been many years since I surfed in Lake Pontchartrain. In the 60's I was arrested by the Levee Board and NO police dept for surfing during an approaching hurricane. I was charged with trespassing in the lake. The charges were dropped I am happy to say and I enjoyed many years of surfing. I competed in the 1st Surf Contest in Grand Isle and lived for many years in California. I am back in Louisiana and have been down to Grand Isle a couple of times. I am sorry that the road to Fourchon is closed. Years ago 2 friends and I were told of big waves at a place called Fourshon and we paddled for long way to the beach through canals. I don't know if there are any of the surfers around from that time around anymore, but It's good to know that there are some surfing going on.

New Orleans has a longboard crew if anyone is interested. We have met up with a crew from SW Louisiana (Team Infidel) several times and cruised all over NOLA. Our group rides consist of riding at least 8 miles (the latest was over 15 miles long). We have covered lakeview (good for getting some slides in on the levees), downtown (parking garages for the hill bombers & corporate art for the freestylers), and midcity (if you have ever wanted to skitch a streetcar...). Check out our Facebook page through the link below for pics, vids, & upcoming events.

Totally amazing videos-I always wondered what the place looked like on the inside. Total bummer that the City of New Orleans hasn't used the damn thing since the 1980's- BTW, if you look at the dedication placard, the facility dates to, I believe, 1961, so you could say that it was a relative newcomer as control centers go. I also had heard talk that the Orleans Parish Sheriff's office once considered using it as a place to house prisoners for a time.

Similar experience. Only I was pulled over for a suspended license I didn't know I had. I had moved three times (all within the city) and an unpaid brake tag ticket failed to follow me to my new address. The city LOVES making money this way. Of course the IRS was always able to find my new address but it wasn't worth it to the City of New Orleans to track me down. So I spent 17 hours in jail, threatened to be beaten up twice by an orange wristband, gave up every bologna sandwich I was allotted (3, which is ok because I hear the prisoners upstairs make them and that's not mustard on your sandwich), and lost both of my shoes to inmates wanting to use them to sleep on. Paid over $1200 in bail bonds and court fees. Also once released property claimed to have lost my watch - value $600. Gotta love New Orleans and it's ass backwards way of doing things. I thought about writing this very same article 2 years ago. Kudos.
